Dogs vs Cats

I have 3 dogs that I love and miss very much. I never knew I could miss them as much as I do until I moved to college. It sounds silly but sometimes I think I took them for granted. It’s easy to do when you can mistreat them and still rely on them to always be there for you.

I believe that dogs are probably the best pet to have; I don't think there is any pet that can compare. Although I have a cat and I like her, I don't really like other cats. I don't like that they rub their back on your legs, or the way they arch their back, or that they scratch people. They usually don't want to be by people and whenever I think of cats it reminds me of a message I learned in church that was related to cats verse dogs and their owner. The service said that dogs think they are humans and look to their owner as a God and cats think they ARE God. If you think about it, it is so true!

I think another main reason why I do not like cats are because I was bitten by one when I was younger. Growing up on a farm, we had many "barn" cats, meaning we
would find kittens all them time, not knowing whom their mom or dad was. The kittens would usually be born in the upstairs of our barn in between the walls. It was very difficult to get them out and sometimes my brothers, sisters, and I would have to use a shovel to get them out. I don't think we hurt them too bad but it was our only way to get them out.

Once we got the kittens out of the wall, we would play with them in the grass. But for this particular day we took the kittens into the house to play, I believe it was because my parents were not home at the moment. They were crying a lot so I figured they were hungry and went back out to the barn to get the cat I thought was the mom. As I was walking into the house carrying the cat, it bit me! I couldn't believe it! I was so angry and at the young age I was, I began to cry.

From that moment on, I have never trusted another cat and my dislike for cats has increased! Overall, I think this proves my point that dogs are better than cats, and although dogs can bit people as well, I think that they are more fun to have as a pet and have more qualities of a best friend!

  1. I completely agree with this post. I have both dogs and cats and I understand where you are coming from. I have 3 dogs and 4 barn cats. For obvious reasons, I am closer to my dogs then my cats. My dogs are always inside and around the family, whereas our cats live outside in our barn. I have never had cats until about 5 years ago. Although I do not dislike them, I find it harder to have any type of bond with a cat. They are very independent and most of them would rather just be left to themselves. Dogs always need a friend. I like this post because it is a subject matter that interests me and I can relate to it.

  2. I agree also! Dogs own! Now I’ve never had a cat, but a lot of my friends do. For some reason, I just get the feeling that my friends’ cats just don’t like me. I feel like cats don’t want attention from me, instead they want me to feel like they occasionally “grace” me with their presence, and then disappear and scratch themselves or something. Cats just seem to give off a snobby vibe. I just want to tell them that they are peoples’ pets, they eat grade E meat out of bowls on the ground, poop in a box, and have no right to be snobby. I don't have anything against cats, but when i re-read my comment it sounds like I have really strong feelings against cats... and I don't.

  3. I totally agree with you especially on the part about cats thinking that they are gods. I used to raise rabbits, but over the past few years, I have become much less of an animal person. If I were to get another pet of my own, I think that I would get a small dog that didn't shed. I can't stand being covered in animal hair. My sister used to have a dog, and it was neat to see the connection that she had with him. He would get so excited to see her, and cats just aren't this way. This is what puts dogs above cats as man's best friend.

  4. I completely agree with you. I'm definitely a dog person. I think it's harder to bond with a cat than it is with a dog. I'm not trying to put cats down or anything but I like dogs better. We always had "barn" cats too, and they were always really mean. That could be part of the reason I don't like them as much as I like dogs.

I especially liked the part about the lesson you learned at cats. I had never heard that before, but once I read it I really agreed with it. You did a really good with this entry. It grabbed my attention and I was interested through the entire thing. I really enjoyed reading it.

  5. Haha. I have to admit I don't care for cats either. They always seem like they watch you and are creepy. My sister was over at someone's house babysittin, and their cat would just watch her. She was especially creeped out when it licked its lips at her.
Dogs do tend to be more loyal and give service.
I especially liked your tie in with the sermon. I hadn't ever thought of it that way. I guess it is a reminder that we should try to be like dogs and not think we are superior. Good work! Keep it up!
